Beyond the Drift: Why “Going With the Flow” Is a Betrayal of Your Purpose

The Myth of Passive Living
In today’s fast-paced world, I frequently hear people, especially the younger generation, use the phrase “just go with the flow” as a mantra for living. It is often used as a defense mechanism to avoid getting irritated or anxious about the future. However, I believe this is a fundamentally flawed and even dangerous mindset. To simply drift is to admit that you have surrendered your agency.
The Sanctity of Life and Divine Intent
We must recognize that our life is not an accident; it belongs to the Creator. The One who created us also holds the power of destruction. Because this life is a divine gift, we do not have the right to harm ourselves, physically or spiritually, through negligence or passivity.
Those who lack a true essence of spirituality often misunderstand this. They treat life as a random series of events rather than a designed journey. Consider this: if life were 100% problem-free, how many people would remember the Creator? My observation is that perhaps 80% would forget God entirely. We tend to turn to the Divine only in crisis, which reveals a transactional relationship rather than a genuine one.
Authentic Compassion vs. Performative Virtue
True spirituality is also about our connection to others. How many of us genuinely pray for strangers, neighbors, or business partners without expecting anything in return? The number is minimal. Unfortunately, many people engage in “performative prayer”, acting as if they care for others merely to showcase themselves as “good personalities” on social media or in society.
Until we deeply feel the prayer in our hearts, it holds no value. The Creator sees the intent, not the performance.
The Beauty of the Hidden Purpose
I firmly believe that the Creator has crafted everyone with a specific purpose. To say, “I don’t have a purpose,” is to waste the magnificent potential of your existence.
The true beauty of life lies in its mystery: the Creator gave us life but did not hand us a manual disclosing our specific purpose. He left that discovery to us. It is our duty to explore, struggle, and find that purpose. Those who cannot grasp this beauty often hide behind excuses. But excuses are the refuge of the lazy; they prevent you from experiencing the joy of the journey.
Analyze the Flow, Don’t Just Follow It
Finding your purpose often comes later in life, sometimes through harsh experience, sometimes through the right guidance of a mentor or coach. This brings us back to the “flow.”
Instead of blindly “going with the flow,” we must understand the flow.
- Is the current taking you toward a sewer, or is it leading you to the ocean?
- Are you drifting toward destruction, or steering toward growth?
We must have the discernment to judge the direction of our lives. Relying on “social media garbage” and fleeting Instagram reels for wisdom is insufficient. We need to dig deeper.
Conclusion
Let us stop making excuses and start seeking our “Why.” Life is too precious to be lived by accident. When you find your right purpose, you stop just surviving the journey and start truly enjoying the beauty of the life you were given.
