The telecommunications company Reliance Jio has been putting in a lot of effort to improve its hardware offerings, including the introduction of low-cost laptops and mobile phones. Earlier this year, in July, the business presented its second laptop, which was called the JioBook (2023), at a price that was rather competitive, coming in at Rs. 16,499.
There is a new report that claims Jio intends to introduce a cloud laptop to market at a price of approximately Rs. 15,000. This indicates that Jio is now considering expanding its personal computer lineup. The cloud laptop, which will be launched in India in the coming months, will bring about a reduction in the exorbitant costs that are associated with shipping a laptop because it will operate off of Jio Cloud.
According to a story that was published in The Economic Times on Saturday, the telecoms company that is owned by Mukesh Ambani was in the process of holding discussions with leading manufacturers like as HP, Acer, and Lenovo in order to debut the laptop in the country within the next few months.
According to a story by ET, which cited a senior official from Jio, the laptop would be a “dumb terminal” with all of its processing and storage activities being performed on Jio Cloud infrastructure. This would reduce the need for expensive hardware, which would ultimately result in a reduction in the cost of ownership for a laptop.
Bear in mind, however, that in order to access storage, processing, and other features off the cloud that a conventional laptop would be able to execute natively, a cloud-based computer would require an internet connection that is always on.
The price of a laptop is determined by its hardware, which includes its memory, processing power, chipset, and other components. Costs and battery power are both increased as a result of the increased capacity of these pieces of gear. The executive from Jio was quoted by ET as stating, “What we are doing is, we are stripping all of this, and the entire processing of the laptop will happen at the back end in the Jio cloud.”
In addition, the report stated that Jio intends to combine the laptop with a monthly cloud subscription, an arrangement that is comparable to that of Apple’s iCloud or a Google One membership. The pricing for the cloud subscription, on the other hand, will be finalized at a later time. Additionally, it is quite probable that the cloud subscription will include a variety of Jio services in a bundle, with specialized capabilities being made accessible on a higher tier plan.
It was also mentioned in the report that the cloud laptop that is being considered is now being tested on an HP Chromebook. In addition, the cloud-based personal computer software may be accessed on pre-existing devices, such as a desktop computer or a smart television, without the need to necessarily purchase the cloud-based device.
Jio introduced its AirFiber service in September, which is a digital entertainment and Wi-Fi service. It was designed to provide users with access to more than 550 digital TV channels and subscriptions to more than 16 over-the-top (OTT) applications.
The AirFiber services provided by Jio provide consumers with a Wi-Fi-like internet connection that is based on 5G FWA (fixed wireless access). These services are intended for users who have restricted access to fiber Internet at their location. The Jio AirFiber service is now available in 262 cities throughout India, with monthly prices beginning at Rs. 599.
JioBook (2023), the successor to the first JioBook, which was presented the previous year, was announced by the firm in the month of July. There is an octa-core MediaTek MT8788 CPU that powers the most recent JioBook, and it is driven by the JioOS operating system, which is based on Android.
At the beginning of this month, Jio also introduced the JioPhone Prima 4G feature phone, which was priced at Rs 2509. The phone is powered by the KaiOS platform and is compatible with a wide range of Jio services in addition to popular applications such as WhatsApp, YouTube, Google Search, and Facebook. In addition, there are rumors that the corporation is working on a 5G mobile device.
